Goal(s)

At the end of the course unit, students will be able to:

  • Explain the interactions between electromagnetic fields and materials (dielectrics, magnetic materials, conductors).
  • Distinguish between polarization and conduction mechanisms depending on the materials.
  • Identify the different types of electrical discharges in solid, liquid, or gaseous insulators.
  • Analyze the physical properties of materials and their impact on electrotechnical systems.
  • Design dielectric materials used in electrotechnical systems through numerical simulation, optimizing their service life under harsh operating conditions (voltage, temperature, environment), in line with the requirements of the energy transition.

Responsible(s)

Rachelle HANNA

Content(s)

The physical principles governing materials are presented and linked to their practical properties. Practical sessions allow students to apply the methods and tools introduced in the course.Numerical modeling: use of finite element methods (FEMM or COMSOL)

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge in Electromagnetism
  • Mathematics for Electromagnetism: Vectors and vector operations, Partial derivatives, Gradient, Divergence, Curl, Multiple and surface integrals, Divergence theorem, and Stokes theorem

Test

Session 1:

  • CC1: 2 project reports (written report and/or poster) + 1 individual test
  • ET1: Written exam (1 hour)

Session 2 :

  • CC1 grade is retained + ET2: Written exam (1 hour)
