Goal(s)
This module aims to equip students with the skills needed to design mechanical and hydraulic systems and to apply these skills to core areas of the Mechanical and Energy Engineering (ME) program.
Responsible(s)
Content(s)
Course on hydraulic systems (4 hours)
- Hydraulic circuits and their components
- Hydraulic pumps and motors
Design of mechanical and hydraulic systems (20 hours + 20 hours of independent study)
- Problem-based learning in groups
- Sizing a chain and belt drive for a hydraulic motor
- Sizing rotary guides in a pneumatic pump
- Sizing a multi-piston hydraulic motor
Dismantling complex hydraulic systems (6 hours)
- Variable displacement vane pumps
- Fixed displacement vane pumps
- Axial piston pumps
Module: Fundamentals of Mechanical Design and Module: Advanced Mechanical Design:
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering (reading technical drawings, technical drawing, connections between solid bodies, linear and rotational guidance)
- Modelling of mechanical systems (general mechanics, kinematic analysis and hyperstatic systems)
- Fundamentals of materials strength
Test
Regular assessment:
ER: Resit-eligible assessment: 2-hour supervised written exam
EN: Non-resit-eligible assessment: mark for the APP assignments
Resit session:
ER: the mark obtained in session 2 replaces the ER mark from session 1
EN: Non-resit assessment
Mark calculation:
- Mark for group-based practical assignment submissions (EN) 50%
- 3-hour individual written exam (ER) 50%
