Goal(s)

This module aims to equip students with mechanical design skills and apply them to core areas of the Mechanical and Energy Engineering (ME) and Product Engineering (IDP) programs

  • Advanced mechanical design
  • Advanced general mechanics
  • Analysis and design of a mechanical system at the FabLAB
  • CAD project using SolidWorks

Content(s)

Advanced Course in Mechanical Design (4 hours)

  • Manufacturing processes
  • Solid connections: fixed joints, linear and rotational guides
  • CAD elements – non-geometric shapes: Bézier, B-splines, NURBS

General Mechanics Lab (6 hours)

  • Power calculations
  • Kinetic energy theorem
  • Modeling of systems and connections
  • Hyperstatic systems

Design and Analysis of a “Handheld Fan” Mechanical System (8 hours)

  • Modeling of a mechanical system
  • Design process
  • Design and fabrication of a mechanical system
  • Use of 3D printing and laser cutting machines in the FabLAB

CAD Project (12 hours of lab work + 8 hours of independent study):

  • Modeling complex parts, potentially with non-planar surfaces
  • Assembly of a mechanical system and verification of the geometric model
  • Use of CAD software (SolidWorks)

Prerequisites

EU Fundamentals of Mechanical Design:

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering (reading drawings, technical drawing)
  • Kinematic analysis and statics
  • Fundamentals of General Mechanics
  • Fundamentals of Strength of Materials

Test

First session :
ER assessment : 2 hours supervised written exam
EN assessment : Average of Lab marks and project

Second session :
ER : new examination to replace ER assessment
EN : Retaking this assessment is not possible

Grade calculation:

  • Grade for the group written report (EN) 30%
  • CAD project grade: group written report + digital model (EN) 30%
  • 2-hour individual written exam (ER) 40%
