Goal(s)

This teaching unit aims to bring to the students knowledge about pressurized flows hydraulics (head losses, pumps, networks, water hammer and transient phenomena), automatics and to initiate them to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as well as thermohydraulics simulations.

The learning outcomes are as follows:
- Pressurized flows hydraulics :
-> design an hydraulic network, including configurations with pump or turbine.
-> analyze the mechanical energy transfers in such circuits and the associated efficiencies
-> being able to study transient phenomena in hydraulic circuits, in particular the water hammer

- Automatics : Model, analyze and command a power take off system.

- Computational Fluid Dynamics:
-> understand and carry out a Verification and Validation study in CFD
-> become familiar with ANSYS Fluent (simulation and post-processing), a widely used commercial code for CFD.

- Simulation in thermohydraulics:
-> discover the CATHARE code (https://cathare.cea.fr/), how it works and its applications
-> understand and analyze the different physical phenomena relevant to the extraction of the residual power during a transient phase corresponding to an accident due to the loss of primary coolant (APRP).

Content(s)

  • Pressurized flow Hydraulics (20h course): hydraulic of internal flows / hydraulic network / transient flows
  • Thermohydraulics simulations (12h project): introduction to the CATHARE software
  • Flows simulation (12h project): simulation of incompressible flows / pre- and post-processing
  • Simulation of automatic control (12h project): transfer function / state approach / MATLAB

Prerequisites

fluid mechanics: physical analysis, integral relations, hydrostatics, head losses, basic on automatic control, numerical method.

Test

Assessment open to resit (ANOR) = continuous assessment (70% of the mark):
- Project report for "CFD" = 25% of the ANOR grade
- Project report for "Automatics" = 25% of the ANOR grade
- Project report for "Simulations in thermohydraulics" = 30% of the ANOR grade.
- practical report for "water hammer" = 20% of the ANOR grade

Assessment open to resit (AOR) = 2h written exam dealing with pressurized flow hydraulics = 30µ of the AOR grade.

Second session: the grade of the AOR is replaced by the new one. The grade of the ANOR is kept the same.

CC 70% + CT 30%
