Goal(s)

Understand the major concepts used in flood risk analysis (flood characterization, hazard and vulnerability concepts) and flood design works (design, uncertainties, cost-benefit analyses)

Responsible(s)

Louise CROCHEMORE

Content(s)

- Characterization of floods and their drivers (fluvial, coastal, pluvial, structural failure/overtopping floods)
- Definition of hazard, vulnerability, flood risk, flood disaster
- Flood hazard assessment (magnitude (intensity) and associated exceeding probability)
- Vulnerability analysis
- Methods for flood mitigation
- Flood mitigation economics
- Estimate design floods accounting for uncertainties
- Use an unsteady hydraulic model
- Slope stability for earth dams and dykes
- Make cost-benefit analysis for design works

Deliverables
- 1 scientific poster + oral presentation : description of a major flood of the students native countries (Where? When? Why? How? How much? Who? When? Mitigation measures)
- 3 projects :
- Flood design + cost-benefit analysis (application to the Villerest dam on the Loire River)
- Hydraulic flood propagation (application of HEC-RAS to the the Loire River)
- Slope stability (case study for earth dams or dykes using PLAXIS)

Prerequisites

Basics of Hydrology, Soil mechanics, Hydraulics, Statistics

Test

1st session
Continuous assessment (CC1): scientific poster + oral presentation (individual) + 3 project-based assignments (in group)
Final assessment (ET1): 1 hour individual written exam

Resit session
ET2: Another exam will replace the first one (ET1)
CC2: Retaking this assessment is not possible (CC2=CC1)
