The purpose of this Course Unit is to be able to design an energy management system for a building.
This requires:

  • to understand the physical phenomena and be able to model the static and dynamic behaviour of a building system for its energy management
  • to be able to model the internal inflows and solar gains
  • to be able to model the impact of the occupation and the comfort felt by customers
  • to ba able to reset the parameters of a building model based on a measurement campaign
  • to know the technology Building Management
  • to be able to design a heuristic energy management system
  • to be able to design an approach based on optimization
  • to discover software tools for building energy management
These skills are developed around the PREDIS Monitoring Smart Home platform that acts as a guideline for the different subjects.

The Smart Grid and Building students will follow, instead of Part 1 a course about Urban energetic.
Knowledge about the elements of the European energy strategy adapted to the urban scale
To provide students the tools to:
• ensure a better quality of life for residents through a high quality comfort inside buildings,
• manage the energy of a building;
improve energy efficiency of buildings, towards zero energy building

The scientific topics covered in this Course Unit are organized around the three means of control of energy consumption in buildings: energy Sobriety in winter and summer; Development and integration of RES and Integration built systems that produce electricity by the photovoltaic process.
The course on energy management in buildings is divided into 16 sessions divided into two major parts:

  • Part 1: modeling for energy management
o S01-introduction: key figures and issues in the field of energy management (R2012, DPE-3CL ...)
Calculation of thermal S02-03 Losses: reminders on regulatory thermal steady-state modeling, link to the RT2012
o S04-05 thermal waste of PREDIS / MHI: calculation of regulatory static thermal model for the platform PREDIS-MHI [evaluated]
o S06 inertia: reminders of dynamic thermal modeling and modeling level required for energy management
o S07 dynamics of PREDIS / MHI: calculating a dynamic thermal model for the platform PREDIS-MHI [evaluated]
o S08 gains and comfort: representation of internal gains, solar gains, the air quality and occupant comfort
  • Part 2: Implementing energy management
o S09 parameter adjustments' of building models: implementation of "black boxes" parametric estimation techniques and highlighting the limitations and implementation of an approach exploiting the thermal calculations (knowledge model)
o S10-11 adjustment of the PREDIS / MHI model: application of a "gray box" parametric estimation approach to PREDIS / HMI platform [evaluated]
o S12 technologies for the control of building systems: presenting traditional and innovative technologies for energy management
o S13-15 energy management and optimization: empirical design energy management strategy for PREDIS / MHI and performance evaluation obtained and compared with approaches based on optimization techniques (interior point, simulated annealing and MILP) [evaluated]
o S16 applications with Vesta-System Overview of software tools for building energy management with cases of application

Part 3 : The content of the Urban Energetic (Smart Grid and Building students) is about
Heat generation: high performance technologies (cogeneration and trigeneration).
Distribution of hot water and heating systems
Cooling systems
Air treatment, air conditioning
Lighting in a building
Zero energy building
