ECTSECTS
2.5
Goal(s)
- Apply conservation laws (mass, momentum, moment of momentum, generalized Bernoulli) to concrete cases (advanced level, complementing the first-year course on Fluid Mechanics)
- Acquire basic notions on the computation of meshes networks (practice level)
- Acquire basic notions on hydraulic machines : choice, use and running (master level)
- Analysis, computation and simulation of transient flows in pipes : water hammer and waves (expert level)
Content(s)
CHAPTER 1 : Application of global flux balances
- derivation of global flux balances
- examples of applications : siphon, road tunnel
CHAPTER 2 : hydraulic networks
- design rules
- series and parallel pipes
CHAPTER 3 : hydraulic machines
- pumps : Euler theory, analysis of velocity triangles, drawing of characteristic curves, real running, coupling with a circuit
- cavitation in pumps
CHAPTER 4 : unsteady flows in pipes
- transient regimes with waves propagation : development of Allievi equations, Michaud's formula, Bergerond's graphical method, method of characteristics (detailed theoretical and numerical presentation)
- waterhammer effects (water level oscillations in an equilibrium chimney)
Prérequisites :
Fluid mechanics (1st year)
Basic knowledge of wave propagation
(Elasticity : lecture notes complements will be given to students who would not have followed this course in the first year optional courses)
