1.5
Goal(s)
- Understand the mechanisms of dispersion of polluants in water, ground and air
- Be able to estimate the evolution of the concentration field of a pollutant using the convection-dispersion equation
Content(s)
The lecture aims at explaining the dispersion phenomenon in aquatic environments, in air and grounds. For continuous or localized rejections of a polluant, analytical solutions of the convection-dispersion equation exist. These solutions make it possible to estimate a vertical, lateral or axial mixing of a plume. Regarding the considered environment, dispersion coefficients are related to physical and hydrodynamical characteristics.
Theoretical laws of dispersion coefficients are compared to experimental measurements. Some specificities such as thermal stratification effects are pointed out.
At the end of the lecture, basing on simple models, students might be able to estimate the risks related to the rejection of a given pollutant
Prerequisites :
Basis in fluid mechanics. The solution of the convection-dispersion equation are given during the lecture.
