Goals

1) Understanding the pollution origin and evaluate the impact on the water environment
2) biogeochemical modeling of aquatic environments

Content

Summary:

1) Pollution sources and discharge impacts

  • Organic and nutrient pollutions (assimilative capacity, desoxygenation, eutrophication
  • Organic (PCBs, PAHs, pesticides, dioxins, etc…) and metallic (heavy metal) micro-pollutants (transfers and bioaccumulation)
  • Urban environment pollution (urban discharges, sewage treatments plants)

2) Biogeochemical modeling

  • Static models. Determination of a assimilative capacity coefficient within river
  • Physical or chemical models: physical, chemical and biochemical variable modeling. Philosophy of the models and equations of the processes (nitrification, organic matter degradation, phytoplanktonic growth and nutrient cycling)

Practical work on field with water collection on a water stream and a purification station (STEP) and physico-chemical analysis within a laboratory

Prerequisites

This course is a continuation of the second-year course entitled "Hydro-ecology". The notions teached within this course are preferable for the smooth conduction of the course (nutrients cycles, global aquatic ecosysems functionning)

Tests

Written test of 2 h
