ECTS 1.5
Goal(s)
The purpose of this course is:
- Firstly to provide a survey of the main ocean renewable energy resources allowing a direct production of electricity. The principle of the used technologies are explained and commented regarding their potential, degree of maturity, eventual benefits and drawbacks in terms of energy cost and environmental impact.
- Secondly to present design methods for off-shore wind and water turbines. The methods used to design a rotor as well as careening device are described in detail. The choice of a fixed or variable rotating rotor velocity is discussed.
Content(s)
1. Survey of ocean renewable energy: Tidal plants, Wave energy, Ocean Thermal Energy, Osmotic energy, wind and water currents
2. Rotor design: Betz theory – actuator disk - aerodynamics – blade element theory
3. Rotor control: Synchronous or asynchronous electric generators? Fixed or variable blade pith angle?
4. Careening device design
