Goals

This module aims to provide basic knowledge of electrical energy, from generation to transport, storage and uses. This module deals with the different sources of electrical energy production, including renewable ones, storage systems as well as transmission and distribution grids.

Content

I – Electrical grids (8h CM + 4h tutorials)

Introduction to electrical grids
•Fundamentals of electrical grids: history, part, design, actors, …
•Per-unit system

Grid structure
•Architectures of transport and distribution grids
•Voltage levels
•Mains components of electrical grids

Key parameters of electrical grids
•Production-consumption balance, impacts of frequency, interconnexions and storage
•Relation voltage – reactive power
•Limits and contraints on electrical grid components

Line theory
•Line models (short, medium and long lines)
•Operation of lines
•Voltage regulation

Tutorial N°1: per units
Tutorial N°2: voltage drops

II – Production energy sources and storage (14h CM)

Production and uses of electrical energy (2h)
•The energy vectors
•World map

Various production sources of electrical energy (6h)
•Solar energy
•Wind energy

Energy storage technologies (2h)

Chemical storage (2 h)

Pump Storage Hydroelectricity (PSH) (gravitational potential energy storage) (2h)

III - Project (32h)

Students work in groups of 5 or 6 persons and have a case study. They have to identify, design and simulate storage systems to address network issues. For this purpose, each group has a referent. The students have to report their work in the form of a scientific article in French of 4 pages (template provided) and also an oral presentation of their project.

Tests

Session 1: Continuous evaluation (50 %) and individual evaluation (50 %)
No session 2
Continuous evaluation: evaluation of the group (article).
Individual evaluation: it includes oral presentation and personal involvement within the project
