Electrical Power Engineering - Courses

In the modern world electricity is a very particular resource due to the constraints of availability and performance. In countries referred to as developed, major blackouts illustrating the critical state of electrical networks, as well as initiatives to reduce greenhouses gases (such as improved energy efficiency and new energy sources), are placing new constraints on electrical materials. Electrical energy is combined with other energies (e.g. petrol), and may even replace these energies. Non conventional energies (e.g. windmill, photovoltaic) have to be connected to the power grid. The Electrical Power Engineering Specialization trains engineers capable of finding solutions to these new challenges.

The 1st year of this Specialization program (2nd year of the Engineering course) covers 4 areas of knowledge:
  • Power electronics, conversion and transformation of electrical energy, electrical networks, materials for electrical engineering
  • Simulation and design methods for electrical components, devices and systems
  • Control, signal processing, scientific and industrial computing
  • Business sciences and personal development (a quarter of the cursus).
The pedagogical methods in place develop knowledge of subject matter alongside an increasing emphasis on autonomy and knowledge development skills: traditional courses, application of knowledge to technological platforms and software packages, multidisciplinary projects.

The 2nd year of this Specialization program (3rd year of the Engineering course) offers 3 professional specialties:
  • Operation of electrical networks ( Production, Transport and Distribution of electrical energy) : PTD2E
  • Power Electronics and Energy Conversion (Power Electronics Components, converters and their design, control and environment constraints) : EPTE
  • Embedded electrical systems and transport (energy conversion systems, monitoring and diagnosis, embedded electrical systems) : S2ET
The teaching method allows students to acquire scientific and technical knowledge in a progressive way so that they can get to autonomy. In this way, numerous practical works and projects are carried out on platforms combining research and training.
