Goal(s)
Knowing how to size a dam.
This course provides a global overview on the dam conception issue whatever its type is (concrete dam, earth dam and rockfills) with a particular attention to the geological studies associated with the dams.
Content(s)
I. DAM GEOLOGY: case studies showing the importance of the geology in the choice of the placement and of the dam type
II. CONCRETE DAMS. The gravity dams: operation principle of a gravity dam, global equilibrium - Maurice Lévy condition. Drain positioning role. Thermomechanical study. The arch dams: different types of archs, operation of an independent arc, operation of an independant console, radial fitting method in key, shell operation, dead weight effect, earthquake effect, cracking consequences, thermomechanic behaviour, analysis of an operating dam behaviour
III. EARTHDAMS AND ROCKFILLS: differente types of dykes and earth dams. Indications for the conception, dam earth compaction, general analysis of the slope stability. Application to the analysis of dyke safety, global behavior of an earth dam (numerical approach).
