Goal(s)

advanced knowledge on energy conversion from electrical machines at fixed or variable speed. The lesson deals with electrical machines, their power electronics feeding, the vectorial control of electrical machines : induction machines and double fed induction machines, study of transient and sub-transient operating of synchronous machines connected to the power grid, small signal model of synchronous machines for power grid and for their stability.

Content(s)

Electrical systems and energy conversion (2 ECTS) CTD 12h + BE/TP 16h
the lesson deals with the modeling of electrical machine in dynamics behavior, for the simulation and control. It details the problems of variable speed control, to produce energy (wing or hydraulic generator, STEP), or for electrical drive (e.g. electrical vehicle). As the synchronous machine is detailed in the 2nd year, the lesson focuses on the induction machine (with squirrel cage or double fed). Stability, control, connection to the power grid for energy production are studied for variable speed situation.
dynamic model of generators (1ECTS) (12h (CM+TD))

The lesson deals with the modeling of synchronous machine at transient state. After some basic reviews on models used at steady state (Behn Eschenburg, Potier and Blondel), the modeling of the machine at transient state, in the Park-Concordia are presented. So, time continuous equations are obtained in d,q referential. After, the damping effects are considered in the modeling, and the operational impedance notion is explained. Finaly, a identification approach of these models is presented.

Stabilité des réseaux électriques (2 ECTS) (12h (CM+TD) + 8hTP)
the lesson introduces the stability notion on voltage, frequency and angle, for power grids and the necessity to guaranty it. First, the links active power/frequency and reactive power/voltage are presented to understand the existing control strategy (primary, secondary, third). The angular stability is applied on a synchronous machine connected to a power grid with infinite power at steady state or submitted to several perturbations. So, stability criteria are defined for the power grid.
EDF engineers will give their experience on the analysis of stability problems, and will give some methods used in power centrals (nuclear and thermal). Practical work are applied with EUROSTAG dynamic simulation to study the stability on a power grid with several generator.
