Summary

In the modern world electricity is a very particular resource due to the constraints of availability and performance. In countries referred to as developed, major blackouts illustrating the critical state of electrical networks, as well as initiatives to reduce greenhouses gases (such as improved energy efficiency and new energy sources), are placing new constraints on electrical materials. Electrical energy is combined with other energies (e.g. petrol), and may even replace these energies.

Objectives

This Specialization program trains engineers so that they will be competent at design, innovation and development of either electrical components or systems. It also provides the skills required for engineers when leading an installation project, managing a network, as a part of a design or research team or as a business engineer, mainly in the economic sectors of energy, transport and civil engineering.

Program

  • Course duration : 3 years (6 semesters)
  • Internships abroad : An internship in France or another country is required.

Program

1st year

The 1st year of this Specialization program (2nd year of the Engineering course) covers 4 areas of knowledge:
  • Power electronics, conversion and transformation of electrical energy, electrical networks, materials for electrical engineering
  • Simulation and design methods for electrical components, devices and systems
  • Control, signal processing, scientific and industrial computing
  • Business sciences and personal development (a quarter of the cursus).
The pedagogical methods in place develop knowledge of subject matter alongside an increasing emphasis on autonomy and knowledge development skills: traditional courses, application of knowledge to technological platforms and software packages, multidisciplinary projects.

2nd year

The 2nd year of this Specialization program (3rd year of the Engineering course) offers 3 professional specialties:
  • Operation of electrical networks ( Production, Transport and Distribution of electrical energy) : PTD2E
  • Power Electronics and Energy Conversion (Power Electronics Components, converters and their design, control and environment constraints) : EPTE
  • Embedded electrical systems and transport (energy conversion systems, monitoring and diagnosis, embedded electrical systems) : S2ET
The teaching method allows students to acquire scientific and technical knowledge in a progressive way so that they can get to autonomy. In this way, numerous practical works and projects are carried out on platforms combining research and training.

3rd year

Elective semester
Semester 9 can be completed in one of two cross-disciplinary programs that concern all majors:

Semester 6

The final semester of the Grenoble INP -Ense3's course is exclusively dedicated to the Final Project (Master Thesis).
The Master Thesis lasts from February to June, either overseas or in France, in a research laboratory or in industry. This allows students to use the methods and knowledge they have acquired in a professional environment. They experience engineering working methods and learn how to manage a project, test solutions and develop their autonomy and initiative.
The Final Project also develops their sense of responsibility by submitting them to a demand for results within a pre-determined time frame. The student engineer is required to produce a report and take a viva on their project.

Board of examiners

Each semester is worth 30 ECTS credits, spread out over the different courses completed. Students must obtain a grade of at least 10/20 in each course to obtain the credits.
